This is the story of an extraordinary experiment called "How We Make Peace: A Muslim and a Jew Demonstrate Radical Empathy.”
In the months following October 7, Kawtar El Alaoui, a Muslim Arab Canadian, and David Rubin Sauvage, an American Jew, held three vulnerable, brave and genuinely transformational conversations, in public, about the war in Israel-Palestine.
Because they've both done extensive healing work, they were able to unearth and give voice to profound and painful psychological truths about the Jewish experience, the Arab/Muslim experience and the tension between the two. Their approach was radical empathy: fully engaging with the experience of the other, no matter how difficult.
Here are highlights from the second conversation:
The bet was that radical empathy could turn the horror of war into healing. The results were even more profound than they anticipated. Folks stuck in cycles of rage and despair found compassion and hope. Witnessing a Jew and an Arab-Muslim hold space for each other, they discovered the humanity of "the other side."
Kawtar and David are now ready to share the lessons–and the technique–from their bold experiment. This talk offers real answers to the questions: “How do I deal with the rage, fear and all the other emotions this situation brings up in me?” “What do I do with people who just don’t get it?” "What can I do, myself, to bring peace?" Kawtar and David will model radical empathy, deep listening and embodied communication for your audience. It’s a profoundly moving and inspiring experience. Attendees will be able to feel that peace is actually possible. The message is: when we make peace between each other, we make peace throughout the world. It’s the same thing.

“The conversation between Kawtar, a Muslim, and David, a Jew, was one of the most emotionally powerful and thought-provoking talks I have ever experienced. Instead of judging each side, Kawtar and David explored the conflicting emotions that the Middle East situation surfaced in them. I left with heightened compassion and understanding. Just seeing this could help any of us to use it for healing in our communities.”

“The courage I witnessed during this session is unparalleled.”

“Thank you David and Kawtar for allowing me (and all of us) to witness this beautiful conversation. They say that hurt people hurt people. True. And healed people heal people.”
Jared Karol
“I am very grateful for the heart and care and respect you both hold for each other, Kawtar and David. I am deeply moved by your emotions, your vulnerability and willingness to lead all of us. I am of Jewish heritage and have long-time friends and colleagues who are Muslim. I yearn for this kind of healing and coming together rather than amplifying hostility and pain and difference.”
